The future direction of the Chinese auto industry

The 2006 International Forum of China Automotive Industry Development was held in Tianjin September 16th and 17th. The forum was sponsored by the China Automotive Technology & Research Center(CATARC,)SAE-CHINA and the Administrative Committee of Tianjin Economic & Technology Development Zone (TEDA). The theme for the forum was Structural Change and International Strategies of the Chinese Automotive Industry. All of the government speakers focused on the need to develop a Chinese owned auto and auto parts industry. They explained how the 11th five year plan would help achieve those objectives. In addition to the government officials executives from the major auto companies both Chinese and foreign owned talked about their expectations for the future of the auto industry in China. The domestic companies were seeking approval to go public and felt that they could operate better with less direction from Beijing. The foreign owned companies provided information on their present activities and expectations for the future. Some like GM did say that the government needs to strike a balance between wholly owned Chinese automakers and joint ventures with foreign participants. The following lists the government speakers and the title of their speeches at the Forum. As we translate the speeches we will put them up on the web site for all to read.
